How To Replace & Update A Front Exterior Door

Let’s replace a front door!

The front door on our house is original. Thanks to some bandaid paint, the front of the door has been limping by. But everything behind it is a mess (Can we all agree to stop painting hinges?).

Also, there are no windows in this area so it is really dark in this hallway when the door is closed.

A front door is a focal point of a house and we can really do better!

In the video above, I show you how took out the old door and installed a new, pre-hung front door in one day. This process briefly leaves a big hole in your house, so I did lots of preparation for the project before starting to ensure a smooth transition. And it all went great!

Here is the before… and after!

The new door is “full lite” so it has a full window, now letting in so much light to the hallway. What a difference!

Instead of reinstalling the old exterior vinyl trim, I decided to upgrade and add some cedar trim. And I’m so so glad I did as it adds a nice warmth to the space and gives it a pro look.
